Why teams leave Jira

Issues describe how you build

Security findings, customer escalations, product plans. With Plane on your own machines, that history sits in your database, in the country you choose.

A tracker people open willingly

Plane covers issues, cycles, modules and views without years of accumulated custom fields and schemes. Teams spend their time on the work, not the configuration.

Self-hosting without running it yourself

Jira Server support ended in February 2024, and Atlassian has announced that Data Center licences turn read-only on 28 March 2029. Plane runs on your own infrastructure, and Pilae operates it for you.

Self-hosted project and issue tracking

Jira is the reference for issue tracking, and its depth of configuration and Marketplace are hard to match. That depth has a cost: schemes nobody dares to touch, and a tracker teams avoid opening. For self-hosted teams, the end of Jira Server in 2024 and of Data Center in March 2029 add a deadline.

Plane covers the work most teams actually do in Jira: issues, cycles, modules, boards and roadmaps, in a fast interface. Where Jira serves a project office rather than a development team, OpenProject fits better, with work packages, Gantt charts and time and cost tracking across many projects. Pilae deploys either on your premises or on dedicated machines in any of 12 Pilae Cloud regions, six of them in Switzerland and the EU, reachable through the private network, with sign-on through your directory.

Moving off Jira without losing history

The import itself is routine. The work is in deciding which workflows and custom fields still earn their place, which we do with each team before anything moves. The move is part of our fixed-price migration, with sign-on set up through identity. Automations built on Jira rules are rebuilt in n8n where they are still needed.

After the switch, the Pilae Agent plans each Plane upgrade, waits for your approval and applies it in your window. Backups are daily and restore-tested every month. Pricing is on request. Tell us how many projects you run and we come back with a plan.

Moving from Jira to Plane

  1. Inventory the projects

Every project, workflow, custom field and Marketplace app, and which of them are still in use. Archived projects are exported and kept rather than moved.

  2. Map workflows and fields

Jira statuses become Plane states, epics become modules or parent issues, sprints become cycles. Custom fields that matter are mapped to properties and agreed with each team.

  3. Import into staging

Issues, comments, attachments and assignees are brought across into a staging copy of Plane, with accounts matched to your directory. Project leads check their boards before cutover.

  4. Switch on an agreed day

A final import runs, Jira goes read-only, and links from commits, pull requests and other tools are repointed. The subscription ends at the next renewal.

The apps that replace Jira

Questions

Can we import our Jira projects into Plane?

Yes. Issues, comments, attachments, states and assignees come across, through the Jira importer in the Plane Commercial Edition or, on the Community Edition, through the Jira and Plane APIs. Complex workflows, JQL filters and Marketplace app data do not map one to one, and we list them in the inventory before quoting.

Is Plane open source?

The Plane Community Edition is open source under AGPL-3.0. The Jira importer, OIDC and SAML sign-in, the GitHub and GitLab integrations and other advanced features belong to the Commercial Edition, which Plane Software, Inc. licenses directly and which also runs on your machines. We tell you in the proposal which edition your requirements need.

What about Confluence?

Plane has project pages for documentation close to the work. For a full wiki, Outline or BookStack runs beside it, signed in through the same directory.

We run Jira Data Center. Does that change anything?

It makes the timing clearer. Atlassian stopped selling Data Center to new customers in March 2026 and has announced that Data Center licences turn read-only on 28 March 2029, so a self-hosted Jira has a fixed end date. Moving to Plane keeps the data on your infrastructure without moving to Jira Cloud.

What happens to our issues if we leave Pilae?

They are in your database and your object storage, and the compose files and runbook are in your repository. Plane also exports projects as CSV and through its API.
