Why teams leave Tableau

Reports read your most sensitive data

Revenue, salaries, customer lists. Metabase queries the database where that data already lives, over the private network, instead of copying it into extracts in another cloud.

Everyone can read the numbers

The open-source edition of Metabase has no per-viewer licence. Opening a dashboard to the whole organisation is a question of permissions, not of seats.

Live data, not overnight extracts

Metabase and Grafana read the source when a dashboard opens. The figure on screen is the figure in the database.

Self-hosted business intelligence

Tableau is a strong analytics tool, and analysts who know it well will miss parts of it. Many of the people with a licence only read dashboards, though, and each of them is still a seat on the invoice.

Metabase covers the dashboards and questions most organisations actually use, reading your databases live. Apache Superset suits analysts who miss Tableau’s range of charts and want to explore in SQL. Grafana covers the operational side: metrics, logs and anything over time. Pilae deploys them on your premises or on dedicated machines in Switzerland and the EU, with read-only connections over the private network.

Moving off Tableau

We start from what is opened, not from what exists. The dashboards in use are rebuilt as Metabase models and questions, checked against Tableau figures through one reporting cycle, and the rest goes with the licence renewal. The move is part of our fixed-price migration, with sign-on set up through identity.

After the switch, the Pilae Agent plans each upgrade, waits for your approval and applies it in your window. Pricing is on request. Tell us what your teams report on and we come back with a plan.

Moving from Tableau to Metabase

  1. Rank the workbooks by use

View counts for the last ninety days decide what is rebuilt first and what is retired with the licence.

  2. Rebuild the logic as models

Calculated fields and extract filters become Metabase models and SQL questions, checked against the figures in Tableau.

  3. Put operational views in Grafana

Dashboards over time series, monitoring data or logs go to Grafana, which is built for them.

  4. Run both for one cycle, then switch

Owners compare the numbers in both tools through one reporting period. The old workbooks stay readable until month-end closes on the new ones.

The apps that replace Tableau

Questions

Can Tableau workbooks be imported into Metabase?

No. There is no import, and we say so up front. Dashboards are rebuilt, and most of the work is in the queries rather than the charts. That work is part of the fixed-price migration.

Does Metabase do everything Tableau does?

No. Tableau is stronger at free-form visual exploration and has chart types and pixel-precise layouts Metabase does not. For recurring business dashboards and ad hoc questions, Metabase does the job. Apache Superset comes closer on chart types and exploration, with a steeper interface. We list what has no equivalent before you commit.

Why more than one app?

They answer different questions. Metabase is for business data in a warehouse or an application database, read by people who do not write SQL. Apache Superset is for analysts who want a wider range of charts over the same data. Grafana is for metrics, logs and anything measured over time. Many teams need only Metabase.

Are Metabase, Superset and Grafana open source?

Apache Superset is Apache-2.0, with no paid edition. The Metabase and Grafana open-source editions are AGPL-3.0. Some features, such as SAML sign-on and row-level permissions in Metabase or reporting in Grafana, are in paid editions. If you need them, the licence is held in your name and shown in the proposal.

What happens to our dashboards if we leave Pilae?

Their definitions are in your Postgres, and the compose files and runbook are in your repository. The data never left your databases.
